How to Convert a ABC File to USDZ on Mac

The ABC (Alembic) format is an animation cache format used in VFX and film pipelines to exchange animated geometry between applications. Converting ABC to USDZ lets you view your 3D models in augmented reality directly on iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro.

Why Convert ABC to USDZ?

Convert ABC to USDZ with Eyemesh

Step 1 — Open the ABC File

Launch Eyemesh and open your ABC file: drag and drop the file into the window, or use File > Open (Cmd+O). Eyemesh will load the geometry from the Alembic file. If the model has separate textures, use the Texture Manager to assign them.

Step 2 — Check the Model

Inspect your model in the 3D view. Check that textures and materials display correctly. If textures are missing, use the Texture Manager to reassign them manually.

Step 3 — Export to USDZ

Click the export icon in the toolbar, select the USDZ format, choose a save location, and confirm. The USDZ file is ready — you can send it via AirDrop to an iPhone or embed it on a website.

What Is the ABC Format?

ABC (Alembic) is an open format developed by Sony Pictures Imageworks and Industrial Light & Magic. It serves as an animated geometry cache, storing mesh deformations frame by frame. It is used in professional VFX pipelines to transfer complex animations between software such as Maya, Houdini, and Nuke.

What Is the USDZ Format?

USDZ is a 3D archive format developed by Apple in collaboration with Pixar. It packages a USD file with all its textures into a single uncompressed file. It is natively supported by iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS for augmented reality display via AR Quick Look.

Download Eyemesh on the Mac App Store and convert your ABC files to USDZ in just a few clicks.
