Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about Eyemesh.

Eyemesh supports 17 formats: FBX, GLB, GLTF, OBJ, USDZ, USDA, USDC, USD, PLY, STL, ABC, 3DS, WRL, DAE, DXF, 3MF, and Unity Package. You can open these files directly or preview them via QuickLook in Finder.

Eyemesh requires macOS 26.0 (Tahoe) or later and an Apple Silicon Mac. A GPU with Metal support is required for 3D rendering.

When you open a 3D file, Eyemesh automatically searches for textures in the file's folder and common subfolders (textures/, tex/, maps/, Materials/). It matches textures to materials by analyzing file names, texture types (diffuse, normal, roughness…), and material names.

Tip: For best results, open the folder containing your 3D files (via Cmd+O or drag & drop) rather than opening individual files. This gives Eyemesh read access to the entire folder, making texture detection much more reliable.

If textures are still missing:

  1. Look for the texture badge icon on the preview — a red warning icon indicates missing textures
  2. Click on it to open the Texture Manager
  3. Click "Select Folder" and choose the folder containing your texture files
  4. Eyemesh will automatically match textures by analyzing file names, texture types, and material names
  5. If auto-matching isn't perfect, you can manually reassign any texture using the dropdown picker next to each entry
  6. You can also mark a texture as "Don't Use" to ignore it
  7. Click Apply — your remappings are saved and will persist when you reopen the file

For OBJ files: If the associated .mtl file is missing or misnamed, the Texture Manager also lets you remap it.

For files without external textures (like PLY or ABC): You can still assign textures to materials manually through the Texture Manager.

Batch remapping: If multiple files share the same missing texture, the remapping is applied to all of them at once.

The QuickLook extension runs in a sandboxed environment with limited file access. It can only read the 3D file itself, not the surrounding folder. This means external textures referenced by the file won't be visible in QuickLook previews.

To see textures, open the file (or its folder) in the main Eyemesh app, where the Texture Manager can locate and remap textures.

Once Eyemesh is installed, you can preview any supported 3D file directly in Finder by pressing the Space bar. The QuickLook extension renders a full 3D preview without opening the app.

Eyemesh offers a 7-day free trial with full access to all features. After the trial period, you can purchase the app for $14.99 (one-time payment) to keep using it. No subscription required — it's yours forever, including all future updates.

Eyemesh automatically detects animations embedded in 3D files (FBX, GLB, GLTF, USDZ, DAE). When an animation is found, playback controls appear at the bottom of the viewer.

  • Use the play/pause button to start or stop the animation.
  • Scrub through the timeline to jump to any point.
  • Adjust playback speed (0.25×, 0.5×, 1×, 2×).
  • If the file contains multiple animations, use the animation picker to select which one to play.

To compare two models side by side:

  • From Finder: Open a model in Eyemesh, then drag a second 3D file from Finder directly onto the preview area
  • From the browser: Enter multi-select mode (checkmark button in the toolbar), select exactly 2 files, then click the Compare button

In comparison mode, each model has independent controls. Click the link icon on the second viewer to synchronize rotation and zoom between both models — useful for comparing different versions of the same model.

  • Rotate: Left-click and drag
  • Pan: Right-click and drag, or Option+left-click and drag
  • Zoom: Scroll wheel or trackpad pinch
  • Keyboard pan: Z/Q/S/D keys (AZERTY layout)
  • Fullscreen: Press F (press Escape to exit)

The view has natural inertia — the model keeps spinning after you release the mouse. Your camera position is saved automatically and restored when you reopen the same file.

Eyemesh offers 3 render modes accessible from the toolbar:

  • Textured — Full materials and textures
  • Untextured — Materials without textures (shows geometry and lighting)
  • Wireframe — Mesh wireframe overlay

You can also toggle the background color (white/black), show a grid, and adjust ambient lighting with the slider.

Yes. Eyemesh supports exporting to:

  • PNG — 4K screenshot (3840 × 2160)
  • MP4 — 360° turntable video with 3 camera styles (Cinematic Orbit, Reveal Shot, Orbit Dolly)
  • USDZ — For AR viewing on Apple devices
  • OBJ — With .mtl and textures folder
  • STL — For 3D printing
  • GLB / glTF — Standard interchange formats

Use the export button in the toolbar or the File menu to get started.
