How to Convert a FBX File to OBJ on Mac

The FBX (Filmbox) format is one of the most widely used 3D formats in the gaming, animation, and architecture industries. Converting FBX to OBJ gives you a universal format compatible with all 3D modeling software.

Why Convert FBX to OBJ?

Convert FBX to OBJ with Eyemesh

Step 1 — Open the FBX File

Launch Eyemesh and open your FBX file: drag and drop the file into the window, or use File > Open (Cmd+O). If your model contains textures, open the full folder so Eyemesh can access them automatically.

Step 2 — Check the Model

Inspect your model in the 3D view. Check that textures and materials display correctly. If textures are missing, use the Texture Manager to reassign them manually.

Step 3 — Export to OBJ

Click the export icon in the toolbar, select the OBJ format, choose a save location, and confirm. Eyemesh generates the .obj file along with the .mtl file and a textures folder.

What Is the FBX Format?

FBX (Filmbox) is a proprietary Autodesk format used for 3D data exchange. It supports geometry, textures, animations, rigs, and cameras. It is the reference format for exchanges between software such as Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, and Unity.

What Is the OBJ Format?

OBJ (Wavefront) is an open format for describing 3D geometry. It stores vertices, faces, normals, and UV coordinates in a text file. Materials are defined in an associated .mtl file. Its simplicity and universal compatibility make it one of the most widely used 3D exchange formats.

Download Eyemesh on the Mac App Store and convert your FBX files to OBJ in just a few clicks.
