How to Convert a PLY File to OBJ on Mac

The PLY (Polygon File Format) is a 3D format commonly used for 3D scans, point clouds, and photogrammetry data. Converting PLY to OBJ gives you a universal format compatible with all 3D modeling software.

Why Convert PLY to OBJ?

Convert PLY to OBJ with Eyemesh

Step 1 — Open the PLY File

Launch Eyemesh and open your PLY file: drag and drop the file into the window, or use File > Open (Cmd+O). PLY files may contain per-vertex colors that will be displayed directly. If textures are missing, use the Texture Manager to assign them.

Step 2 — Check the Model

Inspect your model in the 3D view. Check that textures and materials display correctly. If textures are missing, use the Texture Manager to reassign them manually.

Step 3 — Export to OBJ

Click the export icon in the toolbar, select the OBJ format, choose a save location, and confirm. Eyemesh generates the .obj file along with the .mtl file and a textures folder.

What Is the PLY Format?

PLY (Polygon File Format), also known as the Stanford Triangle Format, is designed to store 3D data from scanners. It supports geometry, per-vertex colors, normals, and custom properties. It is widely used in research, photogrammetry, and 3D scanning.

What Is the OBJ Format?

OBJ (Wavefront) is an open format for describing 3D geometry. It stores vertices, faces, normals, and UV coordinates in a text file. Materials are defined in an associated .mtl file. Its simplicity and universal compatibility make it one of the most widely used 3D exchange formats.

Download Eyemesh on the Mac App Store and convert your PLY files to OBJ in just a few clicks.
