How to Convert a USD File to STL on Mac

The USD (Universal Scene Description) format is a 3D scene format developed by Pixar, widely used in professional VFX and animation pipelines. Converting USD to STL lets you prepare your models for 3D printing with any slicer.

Why Convert USD to STL?

Convert USD to STL with Eyemesh

Step 1 — Open the USD File

Launch Eyemesh and open your USD file: drag and drop the file into the window, or use File > Open (Cmd+O). If your USD scene references external files (textures, sublayers), open the full folder so Eyemesh can resolve dependencies automatically.

Step 2 — Check the Model

Inspect your model in the 3D view. Check that textures and materials display correctly. If textures are missing, use the Texture Manager to reassign them manually.

Step 3 — Export to STL

Click the export icon in the toolbar, select the STL format, choose a save location, and confirm. The STL file is ready to open in your slicer for 3D printing.

What Is the USD Format?

USD (Universal Scene Description) is an open format created by Pixar for describing complex 3D scenes. It comes in several variants: USDA (human-readable text), USDC (optimized binary), USD (generic), and USDZ (Apple AR archive). It is used in film, animation, and VFX production pipelines.

What Is the STL Format?

STL (Stereolithography) is the standard format for 3D printing. It describes only the surface geometry as a triangulated mesh, with no color or texture. Compatible with all slicers (Cura, PrusaSlicer, BambuStudio, OrcaSlicer), it is the most common format for additive manufacturing.
